OU psychologist speaks at Labour fringe event

Dr. Lara Frumkin spoke at a Labour fringe event on 25th September on “is big tech turning a blind eye to extremism and radicalisation?”  She used psychological research to address whether big tech is doing enough to curb extremist material available on the web.  Her research on community attitudes towards extremism show that people are confused about what is meant about extremism.  Lara also explored how the internet provides a platform for those who feel socially isolated to meet people and feel more connected with others.  Finally, she discussed the role of nudge theory in encouraging big tech and policy makers to consider how to address this problem.
